It's been confirmed that just about everything found in the 1924 Ives catalog was also made up special for the John Wanamaker Company of Philadelphia. Some of the equipment, like the accessories, were not specially marked, but did come in Specially marked boxes for the Wanamaker Company. The passenger cars and the electric locomotives all came painted in the unique Wanamaker mahogany brown and carried the "Wanamaker Railway Lines" lithographed in gold script. |

All three 184 series cars in Wanamaker colors. Square top, multi colored windows. Note that at least all three of the cars above are marked '-3'
Pictured above are all three of the 187-188-189 series cars that were painted in Wanamaker colors. Note again that all lighted cars in 1924 came with the '-3' designation.
The non-lighted version 171 above with the lighted car 171-3 below.
Remember that in 1924 only the No. 171 and No. 173 were made. The car above is marked 173 which means it came with a 3235, the car below is marked 173-3 and would have come with a 3236.
No. 190 Wanamaker Tank car
No. 191 Wanamaker Coke car No. 192 Wanamaker Box car No. 193 Wanamaker Stock Car.
No. 195 Wanamaker Caboose
No. 196 Wanamaker Flat
Pictured above is the Wanamaker 3235 and below is a 3235R - the one Wanamaker piece we haven't seen is the 3236. According to Doc Robbie everything from the 1924 catalog was made in Wanamaker colors. All we can say for sure is that we've yet to find a 3236 in the above color and it would appear that Doc couldn't either as he never got a picture of it. 3241 - above and below - the example below has the extra trim like a 3242, but numbered 3241. The auto reverse version of the 3241
The example above is literally mint and still in the original box. The 3243R is pictured above with the 3243 below.
The only wide gauge IVES steam engine made in 1924 was the 1132 steamer. Above is the tender and below is the very rare Wanamaker 1132 locomotive.
Wanamaker Railway Lines No. 690 Set box
Two Wanamaker Signal boxes, the actual No. 330 semaphores (below) look no different than any other IVES No. 330, except of course for the boxes.
The No. 600 lamp post on the left is the only one we've ever seen that was actually painted in Wanamaker maroon. Box for Outfit No. 704 as made for Wanamakers in 1924 - These boxes help date box styles and tell us that the cloud boxes from the early 1920s had been discontinued by 1924. |
