Tender No. 1 (Circa 1903-08) | |||||||||||||||
Circa 1902-03 - this is the earliest FE No. 1 we've found - note that this one has cast iron wheels. This one is identical to the one below except it has tin wheels. Note that the one above has two stripes at bottom, while one below shows only one. This is seen in many of these and was just the way the part was cut out. The earliest Litho tender was marked F.E. No 1 and had red litho boards, frame and cross hatching on the front of the tender. Note also that this tender has a loop coupler (came with 50 series cars) and the base inside is black. Top down view of an example found in a set from 1904. Depending on how they were cut some early litho tenders have two red stripes on the bottom and one on the top. Note that this tender is shiny on the inside and rolled at the top for a gold edge. Circa 1907-08: Accounts vary, but these very rare Chicago Flyer Tenders were reported to have been made specifically for sale for the Chicago area around 1908-10. Note that both of these tenders have the rolled top gold edge and shiny insides.
The example above would be an early Chicago Flyer tender, the example below with it's plain frame, hook couplers and blackened wheels would be late. |
