Typical 3216 in black with red trim and white rubber stamped lettering. For an engine that was only cataloged two years with one small set, it seems to show up quite often and in different variations . Here's a gray one
Unusual orange example - this was a color Ives didn't use until the 1920's. The number is stamped above the word MOTOR and looks like each number was stamped individually.It also appears to be a 3217 as it doesn't have any headlights.
This one is a flat black with larger lettering than others. Also note that this one is lettered NYC & HR, almost as if this casting was re-issued in early 1920s. It would appear that IVES no longer had the 3216 stamp so the number was stamped with individual stampings for each letter. The No. 6 appears to be the same '6' from the 66 tank car and has been found actually inverted (see below) so that the number on the engine is a 3219? Bottom view of 3216 |
