1923 Herald Boxcars | |||||||||||||||
Rich has all these boxcars grouped together as 1923 due to their method of construction, mainly they have twist tab couplers with no holes in them and late Type B - M style trucks where there is little definition left in the dies. These were the last cars before IVES started stamping the slots for the journals in 1925 and switched over to the open hollow rivet to hold the trucks on. Somewhere around this time IVES changed the lithography on all these cars or possibly the process for which the litho stone was applied. Starting in 1923 and after boxcars started showing what I call the 'Halo effect' in the lettering, basically this can be seen where the scribe lines go through the lettering, the lines stop around the lettering and form a 'Halo' around the lettering. This can be seen on the Ill Central car and the Northern Pacific car on this page. Look closely the IC car above has the 'halo lettering' while the CP car below does not.
