54 Gravel Car  (Circa 1901-04)
bright red with handpainted black stripes

Early hand painted gravel car, look closely at the base, you can see this was originally a lithographed car that has been painted over. Ives started using lithography in 1902, but continued to hand paint many cars up until 1904 or later? Normally early painted cars will have embossed peds and litho cars will have non-embossed peds. Early cars in red have also been observed with black bases.

the other side of one above

Circa 1903-04 - A late painted gondola with lithographed base and tin wheels.

Note the embossing in the frame

Similar to red car above but this one is in green, Note red painted tin wheels probably dates this car to circa 1903.

Another hand painted red gondola - Note the plain black frame - compare to green one above with embossed frame and other red ones with lithographed frame.
