53 Box Car  (Circa 1908-09)
yellow with gold trim and black lettering

Circa 1908-1909: Very rare early boxcar. These cars were never pictured in any catalog. We have found them listed in a 1909 price list. 1908 would be the earliest these cars were made as they use the same body as the Brooklyn series baggage. The particular examples shown here have the three different style roofs that we know of; Butterscotch, Cherry striped and solid green.

Circa 1909 - here's a very late example - note that this one and the one below both have embossed 'rib' lines where earlier examples had the rib lines lithographed.

This example is actually a floor train from post 1910 - Note the this one has a brown floor base and a dark green painted roof, but it has basically the same body as the Brooklyn frame cars above. Note the two cars below, the one on the left is the No. 53 from approximately 1908. The one on the right is the No. 153 floor train car from approximately 1912. The lithograph and the construction of the cars is different.

It's a little clearer from the side the later floor train car uses two pieces that tab in the middle just above the end door, while the earlier No. 53 body is one piece of metal that is folded and tabs together at one corner. Besides the obvious difference in color and the numbers, note the fastener plates that are now part of the lithograph in the floor train version. Something you can't see in the picture is the difference in the actual tinplate, the floor version is much lighter and fragile.
