500 Series Litho Passenger Cars    (Circa 1929-1930)

No. 550  Baggage

Blue Vagabond

Circa 1930 - this baggage came with the Blue Vagabond set. Note the blue frame and matching American Flyer Style roof. This color combination can also be found in a rare 8 wheel uncataloged version

Circa 1930 - This is the rare red baggage that was cataloged in only one Clockwork Set in 1930. This one has a black roof (normally comes with blue roof like Blue Vagabond Cars) and a plain red door, below is the more common version with it's original box,

Behind the green door!

Circa 1930 - This might be the rarest car pictured on this page. The 1929 lime green baggage came with a black roof and NO DOOR.  This door is only found on this car and the equally rare green/buff baggage (below). This orange roof version with a baggage door came only with some No. 34 clockwork sets (many came with the red baggage) and a few of the No. 35 Iroquois sets.

Very rare is this two-tone green baggage that matches the colors of the Yankee Clipper cars. This car did not come in the cataloged sets and was part of a rare Montgomery Ward set.

No. 551  Chair Car

Circa 1930 - This Chair car came with the Blue Vagabond set and has shown up in several uncataloged sets that were probably sold after 1930.

Should this be numbered 552??

Circa 1929 - All green 551 cars from 1929 look like the one above, but note that 551s normally have the small windows and are lettered as a Chair Car. Except for the number this looks like a No. 552 Car

Circa 1930 - here's one not seen too often. Light Green and Orange. Same car as found in the 1929 sets but with an 1930 orange roof. This car was only available in some of the Iroquois Sets (No. 35) and the Pueblo Set (No. 37).

Circa 1930 - No. 551 cars are hard to find from this era. Orange roof cars also very hard to find. Here's one with an unusual green frame. We believe this car came in either Outfit No. 639 Tribe Village or No. 37 The Pueblo.

No. 552 Parlor  Car

Circa 1930 - Plain red litho, square window shades, blue roof - these cars were used in numerous clockwork sets from 1930, but the baggage and Observation are harder to find as they were probably only used in the 3 car set.

Circa 1930 - One of two cars in the Yankee Clipper set. This car has rounded window shades, a green and Circa 1930 - One of two cars in the Yankee Clipper set. This car has rounded window shades, a green and cream body with dark green frame and roof. This car can also be found in a rare 8 wheel variation used as part of the Uncataloged "Syndicate Trading Special #2".

This type of red roof will show up occasionally on different Ives passenger cars from 1930. This color red was never used by American Flyer.

Circa 1930 or later - here's a rare car, yes it's a Blue Vagabond Car, but this one never came in the cataloged set. Probably only for separate sale and as part of some Pueblo sets. The one below is even rarer, it's the 8 wheel version with red trucks.

Another one we can't explain. Came in a 1930 Pequot Set. It has a light red frame, blue litho body from an 8 wheel car and a light green roof that is a different color green from other Ives green of that period. The car pictured below has a frame with the same color green.

Another 1930 unusal car - light green frame with orange roof.

No. 558 Observation Car

Circa 1929 - Lime green with black and gold highlights and a black American Flyer style roof.

Circa 1930 - This No. 68 is actually a 558, but Ives used the 60 series bodies when they came in sets with green cars as both have rounded window shades. The red 558 had squared window shades.

Note the rounded American Flyer roof.

Not a car you would normally associate with 1929 or 1930, but this observation with the light red frame and light red roof is known to come in a couple sets from either 1929 or 1930, the example below has the regular black frame but does have it's original box.

Here's a red frame car with a dark green roof - Circa 1930.

Circa 1930 - Observation car for Blue Vagabond Set.

The observation car is from Set No. 39 the Oswego - note the square top windows on these cars as opposed to the round top windows on the No. 68 observation. Ives appears to have always matched window tops in any set they sold - even if they didn't match color, roofs or frames.

Circa 1930 - Yankee Clipper observation that matches the similar 552 above

No. 558 in green with flat top windows. This car would appear to match the green cars from 1926-1927 but this car was never cataloged and note that it has the rounded American Flyer roof.
