Candidate Special

In 1928 before the sale to Lionel / American Flyer these were the cars that were going to highlight their finest sets. Advertised as the Candidate Special these 21" cars were listed in early price lists as being available in green or black/red. The cars pictured on this page are the prototypes of which there are four distinct cars. An actual production model was never made and when the 1928 line actually rolled out after the buyout, the American Flyer body was being used for these cars. These cars although similar to American Flyer cars were constructed of 100% Ives parts, most of them hand made for this set.

Gives you an idea of when these were actually assembled, notice the American Flyer like observation deck, totally hand made by Ives  Note also the all IVES top piece which was used on some 187 Passenger cars in 1928.

This nickel plated Display engine was really the focal point of any Ives advertisements from 1928. Ives advertised these to dealers for displaying this set and others.
